I've had 6 family members in this facility from 1990s to today (2018). My mother was a geriatric social worker - because she has MS, I've taken over her role. (She is cared for at home, and I have much skilled nursing experience because of it... but I am not a healthcare professional... just a seasoned veteran of the 'system.') I would give this place a 3.5 if that was an option simply because they havent kept up with building maintenance. If you are located in Jefferson Hills or the surrounding area, or use Jefferson hospital and associated doctors; southwestern is a logical choice. Adjusting to a new place is hard on everyone involved. Including you. Yes, you. You, and your family member have to make some adjustments. Write your family name on all the clothes. Dont leave valuables laying around. Learn to read medical charts to understand if medicines have been changed or how your family member is doing with their physical therapy and occupational therapy tasks. Visit your family member during a meal and help them eat. Help them with personal hygiene, clip their nails (nursing homes are not allowed to clip nails and the podiatrist only comes once a month), help them brush their teeth. If the room isn't clean enough for you, clean it... be active in your relatives respite care! Like many nursing homes there is a struggle to meet staffing needs, but those who do work here do care. While some things take longer or are not as thorough as one might prefer, nothing is ever not accomplished. Be direct with any request, and reasonable about the timeframe in which you expect things to be done. Talk to the people who work there; they are your allies. Say thank you and mean it... and be kind; the job is hard. Many reviews were so negative and that's not been my experience, so I feel compelled to write this in defense of the wonderful people who have helped me care for my family. While it's true that some minor renovations (automatic doors) would go a long way; it's the social aspect that really creates a place, and if you do not actively engage yourself in the care of your loved one, you will never truly know how many stars southwestern staff deserve.

This is a great place to work. A lot of teamwork from the DON down . A lot of support. Challenging. Get to use your nursing skills. Rewards for hard work.
